Freeform’s upcoming camp horror series “Dead of Summer” from the “Once Upon a Time” creators has cast “OUAT” alums Elizabeth Mitchell and Elizabeth Lail in starring roles, Variety has learned. Both Mitchell and Lail play camp counselors in the summer camp-themed horror anthology project. Created by “Once Upon a Time” creators Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis and writer Ian Goldberg, “Dead of Summer” is set in the late ’80s at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp known for first loves, first kisses — and first kills. Throughout the first season, Clearwater’s dark, ancient mythology awakens and what was supposed to be a summer of fun turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn.
Lail has been cast as Amy, a clever but nervous camp counselor who’s new to Camp Clearwater. Amy is not unfamiliar with being the new girl in social situations and the pitfalls that come with it, so she tries hard to fit in with the other counselors as others reminisce about their past summers at camp, and Amy is the first to discover clues that something disturbing is going on at Clearwater.
“Dead of Summer” landed a straight-to-series order this past November. Horowitz, Kitsis and Goldberg are writing and exec producing the series, with Horowitz and Kitsis directing the first episode. ABC Signature Studios will produce. Production began on “Dead of Summer” in March. No premiere date has been set.

David Fincher has landed a series order for his 1980s-set comedy about the music video industry, THR reports. The series, now titled Video Synchronicity (previously Living on Video), is said to be an Entourage-esque look at the music video’s boom time, featuring plenty of casual drug use and a wide-eyed newcomer who just wants to make sci-fi films. It’s a story Fincher knows well. In the ’80s, the two-time Oscar-nominated director (The Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) helmed the video for Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” among other hits. He has won two Grammy Awards for best music video—The Rolling Stones’ “Love Is Strong” and Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z’s “Suit & Tie.”
Red Band Society’s Charlie Rowe is set to star. Details about the series, in typical Fincher fashion, are being kept quiet, but the rest of the cast is said to include Sam Page (a recurring player on Netflix’s House of Cards, which Fincher produces), Jason Flemyng, Kerry Condon, Elizabeth Lail, Corbin Bernsen, and Paz Vega.
Based on an idea from Fincher, Video Synchronicity will be written by Fincher, Bob Stephenson, and Rich Wilkes (xXx). Michael Lehmann and Marcos Siega will serve as co-executive producers. Fincher was already set to work closely with HBO on Utopia, an adaptation of a British TV series that he is producing with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. Fincher will direct every episode of the show’s first season.
As is typical for a David Fincher project, everything surrounding his half-hour HBO lailcomedy Living On Video is being shrouded in secrecy. No one is commenting, but I hear Jason Flemyng (The Missing) is set and Kerry Condon (HBO’s Luck) and Elizabeth Lail (Once Upon A Time) are in talks for roles in the project, which I hear will be filming two episodes in lieu of a pilot, with Fincher directing. I hear among other actors who are under consideration is Thomas Mann (Project X).
Set in 1983 Los Angeles, Living On Video centers on Robby, a wide-eyed guy who drops out of college and drives to Hollywood with dreams of directing a sci-fi epic. He lands a job as a PA for a company making music videos. In the vein of HBO’s Entourage, the series revolves around the players of the then-exploding music video industry — directors, record executives and crew members, many of them dabbling in drugs — through the eyes of the newcomer.
Lail, who just played Frozen‘s Princess Anna on Once, would play wide-eyed stylist and singer-wannabe Ashley who works on music video productions.
